After co-op, I ran home to help him get started. We got the U-Haul ordered and picked up – yay for a thirty dollar discount for dropping it off on the other side of town where he’s living! Then we started packing it up. My daughter and a friend of his were here to help. It was just a 10ft U-Haul, and we packed it pretty full.
I was driving, and he was leading in my car. We made it to the apartment smoothly. I was happy to see it’s very nice. It’s a gated community with several amenities I’m sure he’ll enjoy. He lives on the side right near the car wash! Perfect location! Thank goodness it was on the first floor! No stairs!!
Unloading went smoothly – between the two of us, we could get everything except for a wall unit that weighs a ton. His roommate came home just in time to help him get it moved. I’m a mom – so I did a quick survey of what they needed, and we were off.
Unfortunately, and you’d have to live in the South to understand this, it’s race weekend. Urgh! Of course, the drop-off location took us right into race traffic. What should have taken 15 minutes took us two detours and over an hour, but we got it done.
I took him and the roommate for a quick dinner, and then we were off to Bed, Bath and Beyond for supplies followed by Target. Doormats, trash can, blender, toaster, shower curtains, towels, paper towel holder, dish/laundry detergent, lamps, light bulbs, cookie sheets – you get the idea. His roommate’s mom brought a ton of stuff from Jersey, so, between the two of us, they are pretty stocked.
My son’s new girlfriend joined us, and they drove me home. We made a quick stop by “Hot Doughnuts Now” when we spotted the sign and made it to my house to pick up his car. Doughnuts, hugs, and he’s ready to fly. I did give him medicine, soup, snacks and a first aid kit as he headed out the door.
Seeing him drive off was hard. I will not cry… I will not cry…
Seeing him drive off was hard. I will not cry… I will not cry…
I'm sure you didn't cry...
ReplyDeleteIt would be so much easier if they weren't soooo excited to leave home...lol
We should go out to lunch today! HUGS
Wow... congrats to your son on moving to a new apartment.
ReplyDeleteDeparting kids, no matters what age they are in, is always a pain...isn't it?
Btw, coming from VB!
Hi Becky - Lunch sounds awesome! lol
ReplyDeleteI didn't cry... I did get choked up and I can't afford to get nostalgic...
April :-)
Nishana, It is definitely that. My daugther is thinking about going back to college in January - yet another move. :)

My 20 year old son left this week. Suddenly! He called me from work Tuesday and told me he was starting a new job on Tuesday night... traveling around the country!
ReplyDeleteI wish I were setting up an apartment!
Thanks for coming by the blog. I'll follow you from the CREW.
Wow, Laura, I know that has to be tough. Mom's are never quite as ready as their sons are, are they? I hope he gets home often! What kind of job is it?
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
April
Aw, lots of hugs your way! He's only across town, and believe me, he'll be BACK- every time he's hungry or broke. LOL.
ReplyDeleteI'm a young mom still with young children. I haven't had to deal with this yet- but I remember being the kid moving out. I didn't ever show my parents, but I had a really hard time with it. I missed them.
Here from VB.
It sounds like you handled everything so well! I can't even imagine how it will feel to have a grown child ready to leave the house (mine just turned 6 months).
ReplyDeleteHUGS! I think it is awesome you helped set him all up:) Exciting, but hard!
ReplyDeleteI have to say I left this post to read for one of my last of the day because I just don't want to face the fact that one day my kids will leave home, (I love what Becky said about wishing they weren't so happy to leave!!) my oldest will be 13 in Dec and I'm already dreading the day he happily leaves the coop (Even though I know that's my job!! Lol!) Thanks so much!!
ReplyDeleteThanks to all who have posted. He says he's had a good first day of independance. Hoping it stays that way! :-)
