“How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.”
George Washington Carver
My older son is studying American History this year. It happens to be one of his favorite subjects! One of the things I’ve always loved to do along with our study of history is to incorporate videos. There’s something about seeing history in action that helps us remember and identify better with the period.
Marshall Publishing offered TOS Crew members the opportunity to review their new DVD entitled George Washington Carver: His Life and His Work. This is a thirty minute video walking the viewer through the life and contributions of this amazing man.
I must confess – I didn’t know a lot about Carver before watching the video. After watching, I’m amazed by a man who came from slavery and elevated himself through education to the point where he was able to make a lasting contribution to the future of African Americans. His genius with agriculture enabled him to teach poor black men how to grow crops, fertilize the soil and make a living of their own.
“We get closer to God as we get more intimately and understandingly acquainted with the things He has created. I know of nothing more inspiring than that of making discoveries for one's self.”
George Washington Carver
In addition to his intellectual contributions, what impressed me most about him was his focus on his work. He chose not to marry and eschewed wealth and fame in exchange for a life of faith and focus. He had numerous opportunities to gain wealth and notoriety, but he chose instead to focus on bettering the world around him. What an impressive human being! I’m so glad the boys and I had a chance to watch this DVD and learn more about him.
The video is not a movie; it’s a documentary. Gorgeous natural imagery combined with narration, quotes by Carver and pictures and video from his life give the viewer an understanding of who he was and what his legacy is. I feel very blessed to have had this opportunity.
“Reading about nature is fine, but if a person walks in the woods and listens carefully, he can learn more than what is in books, for they speak with the voice of God.”
George Washington Carver
